For Students

The International Congress of Classical Archaeology takes place only every five years. In 2018, therefore, it will offer a rare opportunity for students of Classical Archaeology and related disciplines to take part in this most important exchange forum for the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean and the Roman Empire. New research findings, current themes, forward-looking issues and methods will be presented and discussed during the congress. Renowned researchers and young, up-and-coming scientists will enjoy an equal share of the platform. There will be the chance to experience the world of archaeology live in all its facets and to take part in the discussions. Simultaneously, the congresses are an important occasion for networking, nurturing existing contacts and forging new links.

The congress will comprise numerous different communication formats: On the first plenary day, well-known archaeologists will be holding keynote lectures, and specific short lectures, workshops or round tables will be conducted on certain sub-topics on the following days. All of them will offer the opportunity to ask questions and join the discussion. Finally, there will also be a poster session, in which research projects and young up-and-coming scientists, in particular, will present their current research.

Alongside the actual scientific programme there will be a wide range of evening events, including a welcome cocktail, a congress party and a brewery crawl. Besides these, tours to archaeological sites in the region and other places of interest will be on offer. Cologne and Bonn are popular study locations with an attractive range of cultural and entertainment events. There are numerous economical types of accommodation, including youth hostels.

Students will receive major reductions upon registration. A particularly cost-effective option is to arrive as an excursion group (organized by the institute or the students’ association, for example). There are additional reductions for students from regions that are recognized as having particular economic challenges; further, we hope to be able to allocate travel cost subsidies.

Attendance of the congress can be credited as a course with 3 ECTS points.
