Excursions

Before, during and after the congress we will offer a variety of guided tours in Cologne and Bonn as well as excursions into the wider region.

Excursions can be booked through Converia with your user account. Please note that a minimum number of 15 participants per excursion must be reached for it to take place. If the excursion is cancelled due to low enrollment, the full amount of money will be refunded.

Monday, 21 May

Excursion A: Cologne - Aachen | 10.00-16.00 | 35 Euro

Includes:

  • Bus ride from Cologne to Aachen (and return to Cologne)
  • Guided tour by the municipal archaeologist, Andreas Schaub: 'From the Roman City to the Imperial Palace (Kaiserpfalz): A Topographic-Archaeological Tour through Aachen's Old Town'
  • Free time in Aachen's old town, visits to the Aachen Cathedral and the town hall are possible
  • Lunch package and info material

Meeting point: Kommödienstr. 6-8. Participants should be at the bus stop 15 minutes prior to the event
departure time. On-site payment is possible, but has to be payed with appropriate amounts.

Sunday, 27 May

Excursion A: Bonn - Mainz | 09.00-19.30 | 50 EUR

Includes:

  • Bus ride from Bonn to Mainz (and return to Bonn) 
  • Guided tour in the Landesmuseum Mainz by Ellen Riemer, curator of the archaeological collections
  • Guided tours of the excavations of the Johanniskirche (Old Cathedral) by Gregor Ziorkewicz, Priest for the City’s Church Work of St. Johanns, and Guido Faccani, the scientific supervisor of the excavations
  • Possibility to visit the Mainz Cathedral
  • Guided tour of the Museum for Ancient Shipping of the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum by Ronald Bockius
  • Lunch package and info material

Important: Further distances are covered on foot.

Excursion B: Bonn - Mayen | 09.00-18.00 | 50 Euro

Includes:

  • Bus ride from Bonn to Mayen (and return to Bonn)
  • Full day guided tour by the colleagues of the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum, Mainz. The tour includes visits to the Roman tuff mine, which preserves original tunnels and mining traces (tour with Holger Schaaf and Angelika Hunold), the Mayener Grubenfeld, which is one of the most famous ancient quarry sites of basalt lava (tour with Stefan Wenzel and Lutz Grunwald); and the labs of the experimental archaeology (Michael Herdick)
  • Free time at the Museum 'Terra Vulcania'
  • Free time in Mayen's old town
  • Lunch package and info material

Excursion C: Bonn - Trier | 09.00-19.30 | 50 Euro

Includes:

  • Bus ride from Bonn to Trier (and return to Bonn)
  • Full day guided tour by the UNESCO representative of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier, Georg Breitner. The tour includes directions to important points of view and visits to the most famous archaeological sites inside and outside of the historical city of Trier (amphitheatre, Barbara-baths, Porta Nigra, Trier Cathedral, imperial baths, cattle market and more)
  • Lunch package and info material

Meeting point: Am Hofgarten/Adenauerallee. Participants should be at the bus stop 15 minutes prior to the event
departure time. Based on availability, tickets may be purchased on-site at the congress office.

Excursion D: Bonn - Frankfurt | 09.00 - 18.30 | 50 Euro

Includes:

  • Bus ride from Bonn to Frankfurt (and return to Bonn)
  • Guided tour of the Archaeological Museum Frankfurt by Carsten Wenzel, curator of the Roman collection, and Natascha Bagherpour Kashan, responsible for the classical and Near Eastern collection
  • Free time in Frankfurts new 'Old city'
  • Possibility to visit the Liebighaus with an impressive sculptural collection (priced separately)
  • Lunch package and info material

Excursion E: Cologne - Xanten | 09.00-18.00 | 50 Euro

Includes:

  • Bus ride from Cologne to Xanten (and return to Cologne)
  • Guided tour of the various stations of the LVR-Archaeological Park Xanten and the RomanMuseum (RömerMuseum) by Norbert Zieling, director for the preservation and care of monuments, and Gabriele Schmidhuber-Aspöck, research consultant at the APX: Museum, shipbuilding wharf, artisan houses (guided by Peter Kienzle, building researcher and architect), amphitheater, Gallo-Roman fanum (Insula 14)
  • Guided tour of the Parish Museum Xanten (Stiftsmuseum Xanten) and of the Xanten Cathedral by Elisabeth Maas, deputy director of the Parish Museum
